The use of 3D printing technology has brought a significant transformation to the training methods of paramedics at Ambulance Victoria (AV), particularly the Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) team. Through a collaboration with Yarra Ranges Tech School, AV’s Operational Capability Post Graduate and Specialist Education Team has incorporated 3D printed plastic larynx trainers, also known as ‘cric trainers’, into their training regimen. These cric trainers play a crucial role in helping MICA paramedics master the cricothyroidotomy procedure, a lifesaving technique involving the insertion of a breathing tube directly into a patient’s airway by making an incision in the neck.
The training with cric trainers simulates real-life scenarios by replicating the complexities and challenges paramedics may encounter in emergency situations. This innovative approach not only enhances the practical skills of the paramedics but also boosts their confidence in delivering optimal care when faced with critical medical emergencies. The realism and effectiveness of the training have been lauded by Ambulance Victoria’s Post Graduate and Specialist Education (MICA) lead, Sam Caldow, who emphasized the positive impact of this technology on the preparedness of MICA and MICA flight paramedics.
Since the inception of the partnership in 2021, over 170 cric trainers have been distributed, facilitating more than 110 training sessions. These trainers have become an integral part of the training programs, with participants of the MICA Bridging Program receiving personalized cric trainers to support their learning and skill development. The success rate of nearly 95 percent in performing cricothyroidotomy post the introduction of 3D training underscores the effectiveness of this innovative educational tool in equipping paramedics for challenging real-world scenarios.
The production of these customized training aids at Yarra Ranges Tech School showcases the practical application of 3D printing technology in solving critical healthcare training needs. The students involved in creating these trainers not only contribute to the advancement of medical training but also gain valuable experience in utilizing technology for tangible, lifesaving purposes.
