Control Your 3D Printer with an NES Controller: Fun DIY Hack

In the realm of 3D printing, where automation reigns supreme, manual control still plays a crucial role in certain tasks like filament changes and build plate leveling. While most 3D printers come equipped with LCD screens and buttons for user interaction, MechaNickW took a different approach by integrating an NES controller into his custom-built delta 3D printer setup.

Utilizing OctoPrint, an open-source software tailored for managing 3D printers, MechaNickW sought to infuse a touch of nostalgia and convenience by connecting an NES controller to his printer. Unlike modern gaming controllers with advanced microcontrollers, the simplicity of the NES controller’s hardware made it an ideal candidate for this DIY project.

To enable the Raspberry Pi, the brain behind OctoPrint, to interpret the button inputs from the NES controller, MechaNickW bypassed the controller’s shift register and directly linked each button to GPIO pins. Through meticulous testing with an Arduino UNO R3 and subsequent connection to the Raspberry Pi via a GPIO breakout, MechaNickW configured the OctoBuddy plugin to map each button to specific printer control functions, such as axis jogging.

This innovative approach not only adds a fun twist to the 3D printing process but also highlights the versatility of vintage controllers in interfacing with modern microcontrollers and single-board computers. By embracing retro gaming peripherals for practical applications, MechaNickW showcases the endless possibilities of DIY hacks in the realm of technology and innovation.

In a world where technology constantly evolves, blending the old with the new not only sparks creativity but also underscores the importance of hands-on experimentation and customization. Vintage controllers like the NES controller serve as affordable and accessible tools for enthusiasts to explore the intersection of hardware and software, bridging the gap between nostalgia and cutting-edge innovation. So, why not embark on your own DIY journey and unleash the potential of retro gaming peripherals in modern-day projects?
