HP Inc. has recently announced a strategic partnership with Firestorm Labs, a developer of deployable manufacturing cells, to incorporate Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printers into Firestorm’s xCell system. This collaboration grants Firestorm exclusive distribution rights to HP’s mobile MJF technologies, marking a significant step towards integrating 3D printing solutions into deployable factories.
The xCell system, contained within two shipping containers, houses a 3D printer along with post-processing and power-generation equipment. Firestorm Labs has gained recognition for its work with the Department of Defense (DoD) in optimizing the xCell for frontline drone production, securing substantial contracts, including a notable $100 million deal with the U.S. Air Force.
While the military has been a primary focus for MJF ecosystem applications, HP and Firestorm’s partnership emphasizes the broader market potential for the xCell in both commercial and humanitarian settings. The collaboration aims to meet the demands of customers seeking expeditionary additive manufacturing platforms beyond defense applications.
In a statement, Ian Muceus, Firestorm’s co-founder and CTO, highlighted the partnership’s ability to extend high-volume, high-quality polymer AM capabilities to remote locations such as military bases, disaster zones, and medical outposts. This collaboration is expected to enhance on-demand production capabilities, particularly in critical situations where time and logistics are crucial.
François Minec, VP of Sales and Business Development at HP Additive Manufacturing Solutions, underscored the broader impact of the partnership, emphasizing the empowerment of first responders, aid organizations, and military units with localized production capabilities. The goal is to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and deliver critical solutions where they are most needed.
In an interview with NAVWAR’s Spencer Koroly, the significance of distributed manufacturing in military logistics was emphasized as a transformative shift. The partnership between HP and Firestorm Labs reflects a shift towards decentralized production, offering potential benefits not only to military customers but also to civilian users in the long term.
As the world faces challenges posed by an expanding manufacturing sector and critical infrastructure risks, a move towards distributed manufacturing infrastructure becomes imperative. The collaboration between HP and Firestorm Labs signals a shift towards scalable, localized production that can enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and provide essential solutions in diverse scenarios.
Looking ahead, the partnership between HP and Firestorm Labs represents a significant step towards establishing expeditionary AM platforms that can cater to a wide range of applications beyond military needs. By leveraging the capabilities of MJF technology in deployable factories, the collaboration aims to revolutionize on-demand production and make a tangible difference in various industries and communities.
