Microsoft has recently introduced a new feature called Windows Protected Print mode in Windows 11 to enhance printer security. This new mode replaces manufacturer drivers on many printers, aiming to prevent the installation of new printer drivers. The move comes after the discovery of security vulnerabilities in the printer spooler, which allowed attackers to gain system rights, leading to potential security breaches.
In response to such security risks, Microsoft developed the Windows Protected Print mode (WPP) as a security measure. By implementing this feature, Microsoft aims to prevent malicious code from entering computers through printer drivers. Moreover, the new mode ensures that printer spooler tasks are executed with user rights rather than system rights, effectively closing the security gap that was exploited in the past.
Windows 11 24H2 includes the Windows Protected Print mode, which users can activate through the system settings. This mode is based on the Internet Print Protocol (IPP) and utilizes a standardized IPPClass driver. To ensure compatibility, printers and multifunction devices must be certified by the Mobile Printing Alliance (Mopria), an organization established by major printer manufacturers like Canon, HP, Samsung, and Xerox.
To enable the Windows Protected Print mode, users need to navigate to the settings menu and access the printers and scanners section. By selecting the Windows Protected Print Mode setup option, users can activate the feature after answering security questions. Once activated, Windows takes control of print jobs using the WPP driver, enhancing security and reducing the risk of potential vulnerabilities.
If users wish to revert to the manufacturer’s original drivers, they can easily deactivate the Windows Protected Print mode through the settings menu. However, it is important to note that deactivating this feature will require the reinstallation of the manufacturer’s drivers. Additionally, users may find corresponding tools for the WPP drivers in the Microsoft Store to access extended printing functions.
Overall, the integration of the Windows Protected Print mode in Windows 11 signifies a significant step towards enhancing printer security and mitigating potential security risks associated with printer drivers. By providing users with more control over printer security settings, Microsoft aims to create a more secure computing environment for its users.
