President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is set to embark on a state visit to Cambodia, where several agreements are anticipated to be signed, focusing on areas such as combating transnational crimes and enhancing higher education. The Department of Foreign Affairs revealed that these deals will encompass various sectors, including air services, in a bid to strengthen ties between the two nations.
The state visit, scheduled from September 7 to 9, comes following an invitation from His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia. Upon arrival, President Marcos and First Lady Louise “Liza” Araneta-Marcos will be greeted by Acting Head of State and Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, along with his spouse, marking the commencement of diplomatic discussions.
During the visit, President Marcos is expected to engage in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet to explore avenues for collaborative efforts in addressing transnational crimes and fostering connectivity between the two countries. Discussions will also encompass trade relations, with a focus on expanding market access and promoting Filipino products in Cambodia.
Moreover, the agenda includes dialogues on agriculture, tourism, and cultural exchanges, aiming to deepen the cooperation and mutual understanding between the Philippines and Cambodia. Key initiatives such as diversifying sources of goods and encouraging tourism flow between the two nations will be at the forefront of these discussions.
President Marcos will also connect with the Filipino community in Cambodia, a significant number of whom are engaged in the education and services sectors. With over 7,000 Filipinos residing in Cambodia, the meeting serves as an opportunity to address their concerns and strengthen ties with the diaspora community.
Accompanying President Marcos on this diplomatic mission are top government officials including Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., and other key figures from various ministries. Their presence underscores the importance of this visit in fostering international relations and exploring avenues for collaboration in multiple sectors.
As the two nations come together to solidify their partnership, these agreements signify a step towards enhancing economic, social, and cultural exchanges between the Philippines and Cambodia. The visit not only strengthens bilateral ties but also sets the stage for future collaborations that can benefit both countries in the long run.
